VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES


Asian Health Services provides health care services to the low-income, non-English or limited English speaking Asian community and advocates for the underserved. Founded in 1974, AHS is a nonprofit, licensed community clinic which provides medical, health education, patient advocacy services. We provide services in Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Laotian, Mien, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and English.

LANGUAGE and CULTURAL ACCESS PROGRAM

Commitment: minimal training required, commitment time July 6 - July 21
Requirements: Native American English speaker with good enunciation and clear pronunciation.
Description: AHS trains bilingual community members to interpret in health care settings. Volunteers needed to help develop English and Cantonese training and screening tools. Male voice talent with a native American English accent is needed for recording interpreter training materials. Pleasant voice, good enunciation, and clear pronunciation are necessary.

Requirements: Native Cantonese speaker who can read and write Chinese, preferably familiar with medical terminology.
Description: AHS trains bilingual community members to interpret in health care settings. Volunteers are needed to help develop English and Cantonese training and screening tools. This job is to record medical terminology lists for students to develop their knowledge and pronunciation of terms. We are looking for native Cantonese speakers who can read/write Chinese. Good enunciation, clear pronunciation, and accurate tones are necessary. Knowing medical terminology would be ideal!

Requirements: Some training and bilingual in an Asian language, preferrably Korean, Cambodian, Laotian, Mien or Vietnamese.
Description: Administrative tasks: filing, data entry, telephone contact. Advocacy tasks: interpretation for patients at AHS Membership Department and assist in outreach activities.

 

LABOR COACH PROGRAM

Requirements: Attend Labor Coach training & be bilingual in an Asian language - Cantonese and Vietnamese are most needed. Most have a flexibility schedule to be at the hospital for an indefinite time period.
Description: Provide labor and delivery support, patient advocacy, and interpretation for mono-lingual Asian women during labor and delivery in the hospital.   More details...

 

PUBLIC RELATIONS & DEVELOPMENT

Description: Work with Public Relations & Development staff on special events, research, and fund raising. Opportunities available for developing community groups and resources, learning about grant making and other aspects of fund raising and development.

Description: Administrative tasks: typing, word processing, filing, data entry. Patient Advocacy: assist with voter registration and citizenship campaign.
