Please note: Beginning 7/15/2003, Asian Health Services' prenatal patients choosing to deliver at Summit Medical Center and Alta Bates Medical Center will have their babies delivered by East Bay Perinatal Medical Associates.  All deliveries will be handled by one of the certified nurse midwives/doctors on call.  For more information about East Bay Perinatal Medical Associates, go to www.ebpma.com.

Our staff is fluent in Cambodian, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin, Tagalog, Toishanese, and Vietnamese. Interpreters are also available in other Chinese dialects, Laotian, and Mien. The members of our medical staff are caring professionals who can speak your language, understand your culture, and are committed to advocating for the community's right to health care.

Family physicians  are trained to attend to the health problems of all members of the family, both men and women, including infants, children, adults, and the elderly; as well as prenatal care. They focus on preventive health care, and are well qualified to diagnose and treat you and your family for a broad spectrum of illnesses. They are specially trained to deal with the social and psychological problems of their patients, and are attuned to the profound influence psychological health has on medical illness. Family physicians are trained to think in terms of the overall health of the entire family unit, and not solely on the health of each member.

Internists  are specialist in Internal Medicine, the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the physiology and pathology of internal organs and with the medical diagnosis and treatment of disorders of organs. Internist treat adults only.

Pediatricians  practice the specialty of medical science concerned with the physical, emotional, and social health of children from birth to young adulthood. Pediatric care encompasses a broad spectrum of health services ranging from preventive health care to the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases. 

Pediatricians understand the many factors that affect the growth and development of children. They understand that children are not simply small adults. Children change rapidly, and they must be approached with an appreciation for each stage of their physical and mental development.

Preventive  
medicine 
specialists 
like to say that their patient is the community. With training in the sciences of epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental and occupational health and health services administration as well as clinical prevention, they are uniquely qualified to work with both individuals and the community to promote health and prevent diseases. Preventive medicine specialists manage programs in public and community health and conduct research to prevent and control disease. They initiate programs in infectious disease prevention and control, in AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases, and in chronic disease prevention. They use scientific methods to identify health and safety hazards in the workplace and work to prevent occupational illness and injury.

Nutrition  
 
Registered dietitians are nutrition experts who work in a wide variety of employment settings, including health care, business and industry, public health, education, research, and private practice.  The R.D. is responsible for educating patients about nutrition helping people to improve the quality of life through healthy eating habits and administering medical nutrition therapy as part of the health care team.

The professional organization for registered dietitians is The American Dietetic Association 
The state organization for dietitians is The California Dietetic Association  
 
Consulting obstetricians  are specialist in prenatal care. Family physicians are also qualified to take care of prenatal patients. The OB physicians are available at AHS once a month and help our providers with any problems that may occur; higher risk prenatal patients are transferred to the care of obstetricians when necessary.

The prenatal support team  provides the patient education and support needed for healthy mothers and babies. Volunteer bilingual labor coaches are available to assist the family during deliveries at the hospital. 
 
Mid-level practitioners include Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Physician Assistants (PA). They work under the supervision of medical physicians and are qualified to see patients with uncomplicated problems.
