REACH (Real-world Exposure and Advocacy in Community Health) Summer Internship Program |
Asian Health Services is pleased to announce the second annual REACH internship program for Summer 2008, slated to begin on June 16th.
REACH was the brainchild of the AHS Pipeline committee, an advocacy group formed in 2006 to address the ongoing need for linguistically and culturally competent health care professionals in our community. Our goal is to train pre-health professionals in hopes that they will choose career paths that will serve the Asian underserved community.
Already, AHS has been at the forefront of training medical students and residents in the primary care model. In a desire to impact students at other levels, the Pipeline committee embarked on an ambitious project in early 2007 by sketching a plan for targeting college students and graduates who are at a career crossroads. We wanted to create an internship program that would not only bring students to the frontline of community medicine, but also expose them to the inner-workings of a community health center. The launch of REACH in the summer of 2007 was nothing short of a success. The internship program took on a multi-level approach to ensure that interns would get the most out of their experience at AHS. Combining clinical rotations, special projects, and community health seminars, REACH achieved what it set out to prove – that students benefit the most when given a balance of structure, direction, and creative freedom. Having graduated four successful interns, REACH hopes to build upon its foundation, with more exciting additions and projects, as it looks ahead to Summer 2008.
