Asian Health Services Youth Program provides comprehensive reproductive health information and services through outreach, prevention, education workshops, one-to-one counseling, and clinical access for youth living in Alameda County.
Overview of Intern Duties
- Peer Counseling and Education
- Provide reproductive health education and counseling to Youth Program clients during regular Youth Program office hours and during Teen Clinic.
- Co-Facilitating Health Education Workshops
- Co-facilitate at least 4 workshops with Community Health Specialists in school or community-based settings.
- General Program Assistance
- Client database support
- Curriculum development assistance
- Street, special event and internet outreach support
- Other miscellaneous duties
Expectations of Interns
- Youth Program interns will attend and complete a basic reproductive health education
training.
- The training will include topics such as reproductive health care, contraceptive methods, sexually transmitted infections, communication skills, values exploration, clinic paperwork, family planning programs and funding, and healthy sexuality, facilitation training, client centered counseling techniques and general health education techniques.
- Interns are also expected to have good verbal and written skills, able to perform a variety of tasks and work with a variety of people. Interns must have a non-judgmental attitude and support young people making healthy and responsible choices. Interns must have a demonstrated maturity to discuss difficult subjects.
- Interns will work as peer counselors during Teen Clinic Wednesdays and during program office hours, providing peer health counseling, education and support to Youth Program clients.
- Interns will assist in co-facilitation of health education workshops in school or community organization settings, with Community Health Specialists.
Expectations of Asian Health Services Youth Program
- AHS Youth Program will provide:
- Overview and orientation of Youth Program
- Training
- Training on reproductive health topics
- Training on support counseling and health education
- Training on workshop and group facilitation
- Linkages to supplemental training resources
- Letters of Recommendation upon intern’s successful completion of internship program.
- For facilitation of workshops, AHS Youth Program will provide facilitation sites, dates and times, as well as co-facilitation help. Interns will not be expected to coordinate facilitation dates and places.

- This is a 6 month- 1-year internship during 2006-2007.
